What’s a Business to Do? Have a BAILOUT Sale!
Every small business in America is feeling the pinch of the market meltdown and the credit crunch. Some business are worried about making payroll while lines of credit dry up. And consumers are clamping up their pocket books, and fast.
We in the search marketing industry are busy urging our clients to stick with their search engine marketing campaigns through this period. Too us it’s obvious that SEO and PPC marketing are providing the highest rates of return on their marketing dollars, but we still need to ease clients fears.
For the past couple weeks the SEM blogosphere is full of posts about search marketing during a recession and market collapse.
- Andrew Shotland says that we are about to be flooded by wannabe SEO’s looking for new jobs
- Larry Sullivan tells us that a large proportion of small business owners feel the Bailout Bill will not help them
- Laura Callow wrote this killer post on search marketing and peoples spending habits in a recession
- at Search Engine Land they talk about managing PPC campaigns during the possible upcoming volatility in click prices (i’m already seeing this to some extent)
- And at SEOmoz Randfish outlines the current economic environment and some advice for search marketing
Time to Get Creative
Now we as marketers, on behalf of our clients, should use a little extra creativity to help ensure search traffic continues to produce sales.
Just the other day while speaking to a client I was told that while they continue to get the leads coming in from their website they have been having a really hard time making the sale. Their customers are all afraid to spend money right now. And they’ve gotten a little worried about it, understandably.
So we came up with a fun idea to play on the current economic crisis and help entice their customers to spend now versus waiting. Hold a sale, but not just any sale, a BAILOUT SALE. Ya, how fun is that?
I pitched the idea to them last night and this morning we discussed it a bit more. By the end of today we had their blog post about the sale up and running and feeding some PPC traffic to it too. Now lets just see how it goes.
It’s a zany enough idea that it just might also provide a little viral run in the blogging and social networking realm and get them some new links. Fingers crossed.

Seems others are having fun with “Bailout Sales”
In San Fransisco someone posted this on Craigslist’s garage sale section;
and in Phoenix another garage sale;
I think a bailout sale is a great idea if for nothing other than great branding.
That’s part of the idea behind it. Something a little remarkable that people may remember. Also building a little goodwill by offering this type of sale at a time when many are worried about their finances.
